What is the routine of removing the prescription filled?

I'd like to know the process of getting a prescription filled. Here's what I have so far:
1) You go to the doctor, the doctor writes you a prescription.
2) You go to the pharmacist, and hand them the prescription paper.
What happens after that? Do they call your doctor and confirm anything?
